Klaus Schormann promise to the IOC (and his unwillingness to discuss it)

geschrieben von sven am 07.September 2008
After two German Gold Medals at 2007 World Championchips in Berlin Klaus Schormann wrote himself a congratulation letter "from President (UIPM) to President (German Federation)" which was then forwarded to the athletes by the secretary on his behalf - see below - rather than writing the athletes himself.

Klaus Schormann is the President of the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM), the German Federation (DVMF) and the regional Federation in the German State Hessen (HVMF).

What was also quoted many times in the press lately, that there is the discussion that Modern Pentathlon should be changed from a traditional five event day into a four event with a shoot and run combination, according to Mr. Schormann.

But, is it really a discussion ?
Last year, a group of international Athletes gave the President a petition, which was signed by many international medal winners and top pentathletes from different countries. The petition contained their concerns about the new shoot and run format. The president was cited that athletes and coaches should stay calm about those things. "Coaches get paid for what they do and Athletes should do sport".

Well, it might be true that Athlete's word is actually not that decisive in international sport politics, at least in Modern Pentathlon. But the risk of changing the sport so tremendously without having the athletes on board is quite high !

The olympics have shown that sport is getting more and more professional, and that athletes, who are doing nothing but sport, are winning the gold medals at Olympic Games. A lot of pentathletes became professionals towards the olympic games as well. They are in their mid twenties or early thirties.

Changing the sport could mean for a big amount of recent top athletes their career end and the amount of international athletes is not that thic as in other Olympic Sports.

Will the sport die by a political promise ?

The "shoot-run-combination" in Modern Pentathlon is an idea Schormann raised long time ago. He also proposed it initially to Beijing Organizing Commitee (BOCOG), but then could not get it agreed within the UIPM quickly enough.
It seems that this "change" is a personal promise Schormann gave to IOC members, while it is no secret that his career goal is an IOC membership - is he therefore unwilling to discuss the consequences ?
He is 62 and his political career might not be affected by his today decision making, but he owes sustainable politics to the youth of the world, who is following the dream of Olympic Champion in Modern Pentathlon - to become the next Andrei Moiseev or Lena Schöneborn.

"Change is unpleasing for some" Schormann was quoted in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Hopefully for not too many Mr. Schormann. Officials do politics, athletes do sport !
